Video of the Day: 101 Not Out – Wayne Rooney the Centurion!

I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say it was an awesome sight to see Wazza complete his century of Manchester United goals (with another one, just to get him started on his way to 200) against Wigan on Saturday.

Rooney joined an exclusive club of 21 players to grab a century in a United shirt, a feat made even more impressive when one considers he is only 23! I think it’s fair to say we can expect Rooney to add quite a few more to the 101 he has already scored at United, before he calls it a day.

But for now, sit back, and enjoy a short clip taking you through some of Rooney’s best!

United Zone Final Word: Wigan Athletic vs. Manchester United

After the shock 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor suffered in mid week by Manchester United, the Red Devils were eager to set the record straight. And on the UnitedZone forums, the mood was no different. Prior to kick off various users echoed the same sentiment…
“The wrong has to be corrected, and if there is a team I would back to perform after an adverse result, it’s United. Especially at one of our more profitable hunting grounds.” Mg91

“All I care for is a solid performance and a win.
The team needs to play better overall and I’m hoping it starts today.”
Funkdoctorspock

And so the match kicked off. It was all in favour of United from the get go, with Manchester creating the best chances. Some of the more notable misses included Darren Fletcher, whose shot was well blocked by Titus Bramble on the line, Paul Scholes, who really should have scored after a clever little back heel from Dimitar Berbatov teed him up just outside the box, and Wayne Rooney, who despite demonstrating terrific touch and strength to hold of Bramble, just could not steer the ball past Kirkland. Keano’s Big Match Preview: Wigan Aways

This is another tough game I think, and our visits to the JJB in recent seasons have proven harder then expected. We had a comfortable 3-1 win three seasons ago when Wigan gave us a scare and in the last two seasons, it has been very tight, and each time we came out with the three points and each time, those three points were massive in winning the league title.

With Martinez in the hot seat now at the JJB, it’s a new kettle of fish and one Fergie will have to grasp quickly as the man clearly knows what he’s doing with Wigan. An extremely impressive start at Villa Park coupled with surprise defeat at home to newly promoted Wolves, will have them chomping at the bit to derail our title challenge early on.

Happy Birthday Old Trafford! 100 Years of turning Dreams into Reality…

This week, Old Trafford celebrated 100 glorious years of existence. To mark this monumental occasion, I invite you all to read Keano!’s informative and well written piece, which will hopefully convey to you the magic of the Theatre of Dreams.

Old Trafford, Manchester is one of the most impressive football stadiums worldwide and is home to Manchester United. There’s been a long arduous history over Old Trafford and here, we are going to look at the beginning of a new stadium, the destruction which followed, the rebuild and of course what stands proud today on Sir Matt Busby Way!

The Beginning

As Newton Heath, United played at both North Road and Bank Street but as developments took place around the club, so did a stadium change. The name was changed to what we all know them by today, Manchester United and a plot of land was bought for what at the time was a very expensive at £60,000, and it was here that the home of the club would be constructed. In 1909, the build was complete and the end product was a stadium, terraced on 3 sides with a main stand, seated and under cover, which was the South stand and still to this day, remains the main stand. Designed by Archibald Leitch, a man also responsible for works at Ibrox, Hampden Park and White Hart Lane, had put forward plans for the stadium to be capable of holding a capacity of 100,000 although due to expenses the capacity had to be cut back to 60,000 which could stretch to 80,000 if need be. It was in this stadium where the highest ever recorded attendance at Old Trafford was taken and it came in a meeting between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Grimsby Town in an FA Cup semi-final, meaning that Manchester United don’t officially hold the highest attendance for within their own homeground. Wolves and Grimsby attracted a total of 76,962 spectators in March 1939 while the biggest number recorded at a United game is just short at 76,098 against Blackburn Rovers in March 2007. 1934 saw the replacement of the roofing over the South stand along with the adding of cover to the two South corners and partial covering of the North stand. The stadium was progressing well and more key developments were on the horizon but unfortunately. (more…)

Vidic thinking of Barcelona??

Just when you think the silly season is over, this old story rears its ugly head again. Since being misquoted in a Russian newspaper the rumour has persisted. Despite immediately denying having denied ever having said that he disliked life in Manchester, through the off season he has been persistently linked with AC Milan and Real Madrid. Of course, he has denied the rumour every time.

A New Season Beckons

  • 2007: Champions of England.
2008: Champions of England, Champions of Europe
2009: Champions of England, Champions of the World
    2010: Anything is possible.
  • And that is what makes the start of a new campaign so exhilarating. This unknown quantity that is the new season has had me drooling all week long, and when kick off time comes around on Sunday, I’ll be on the edge of my seat from the get go. Sure, it’s nice to look back on the recent achievements of this fantastic group of players, as you can see above, but there are few things in football that match the anticipation of the fans in the immediate lead up to the kick off another season. Who will be crowned champions? Who will disappoint? Who will fill the void left by Ronaldo? Will the new signings prove their worth? Will United’s crop of youth establish themselves as first teamers? These are just some of the questions I’m sure fans everywhere has considered over the past seven weeks or so. Fortunately, answers are not too far away. This Sunday, when United kick off at Old Trafford against Birmingham, we will all depart on an epic nine month journey, one which will have its highs and lows, and one which will inevitably deliver moments of brilliance. That’s right folks. Its football season again!

Goal of the Season – 2008/2009

This goal had very little competition. And it is no wonder as it was a surprise, a beauty and a necessity at the same time. Why a surprise? You don’t see very often goals scored by 17 year old players on their debut. Why a beauty? This question doesn’t make sense. Why a necessity? Because Manchester United desperately needed a victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, I’m proud to present Manchester United’s Goal of the Season (according to UZ users) – Federico Macheda vs Aston Villa:

Goal of the Month: May 09

A heel flick goal is always a lovely one. And Carlos Tevez’s goal against Wigan is not an exception. A touch of a genius and a moment of brilliance changed the curse of the game. Being a marvelous goal and having such an impact on the outcome of the match, Tevez’s goal has been voted as the May Goal Of The Month by United Zone users.

Ladies and gentlemen, enjoy Tevez’s goal against Wigan Athletic:

Goal of the Month: April 09

One word: MACHEDA. I guess you already know what I’m talking about. The most surprising and one of the most important goals of the season. I really can’t choose the right words to describe the beauty of Kiko’s goal. I’ll let you enjoy the marvel of this jewelry.
