Manchester United vs. Liverpool

English Premier League
Old Trafford
21. 03. 2010

Match Preview:

The vastly different fortunes of Manchester United and Liverpool throughout this season on the pitch will mean little to anyone come 1.30pm Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford. All that will matter is winning, and as always, it’s personal. As United look to build on their current form and remain at the top of the Barclays Premier League table, Liverpool requires all three points to stay in the hunt for Champions League football next season. Their goals may be a world apart, but make no mistake about it; this is going to be the same fierce derby fans around the world have savored year after year. (more…)

After Scholes’ strike sent United to the top of the Barclays Premier League table at the weekend, United’s focus has once again returned to continental concerns with AC Milan visiting Old Trafford on Wednesday night. United hold the advantage going into this one, with three away goals to their credit as well as a one goal advantage, and will remain favorites to see off their Italian foes at Old Trafford to progress to the quarter finals. Wolverhampton Wolves vs. Manchester United
English Premier League
Molineux
06. 03. 2010

Match Preview:

After losing at Goodison Park two weeks ago, Manchester United will be thrilled to have won the first major trophy of the season, which they secured at Wembley with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa. Sir Alex Ferguson will hope that such a morale boosting win will be the catalyst which will fire United to a prolonged run of form which is now essential to any ambitions United may harbour to win the title.

Wolves on the other hand have only managed one win in seven. Although that win did come against a strong Tottenham side, losses to the likes of Bolton and Hull has the Wolves hovering ominously over the relegation zone. Having already lost twice to United this season already, in the Carling Cup and earlier league fixture, there is not much cause for optimism at Molineux, even though they did defeat United 1-0 last time Fergie’s men played Wolves at Molineux in the league. It isn’t often that fans are treated to four Manchester derbies in one season, but this season, thanks to the two legged semi final of the Carling Cup, that is exactly what fans will see this season. On Wednesday, United will face fierce rivals Manchester City at Eastlands in the first leg of the Carling Cup semi final. The Manchester Derby – No further introduction required.

If you happened to glance at the English Premier League table this morning, you would find that, as it stands, the top four teams are, in order: Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City. Anyone care to pick the odd one out? Of course, Manchester City is the name which jumps out more than most in that list. When you consider that it’s been 33 years since their last success in any competition it does come as a bit of a surprise to see them occupying third place, even this early, in the Premier League. They are the club on everyone’s lips. Having spent over 200 million pounds in the transfer market this season, big things are expected of Manchester’s “other” club, and why not? With a much stronger squad than last season, more money than God himself, and a 100% start to the season, whose going to stop them from finally enjoying a successful season? Well, that’s an easy one: Manchester United.

Besiktas vs. Manchester United – Pre Game

There is no doubt that United’s 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final was probably one of the most crushing experiences I’ve ever had as a Manchester United fan. It proved to be a massive dampening on any sense of achievement I could salvage from a third successive Barclays Premier League title, or any of the other impressive achievements accomplished by Manchester United last season. However, if there is one thing anyone could salvage from that ill fated night in Rome, it is the chance to set the record straight. United have again and again proved that the devestation of one loss can only be measured in relation to the reaction it provokes, something which was proved last season after crushing defeats at the hand of Liverpool and Fulham, and one which was proved even more recently after the shock 1-0 loss to newly promoted Burnley, which preceeded the 5-0 destruction of Wigan Athletic. United’s reaction to continental defeat last season will be no different, as Sir Alex kindly reminds us:

“You don’t like losing games, but that reaction has been part of me for a long time. You get defeats, everyone gets them, and how you recover from is the important thing,” he insisted.

“With any defeat, you don’t enjoy them but you have to move on and learn from them. We have put what happened in Rome behind us. You just move on and that’s what we have done.”

A New Season Beckons

  • 2007: Champions of England.
2008: Champions of England, Champions of Europe
2009: Champions of England, Champions of the World
    2010: Anything is possible.
  • And that is what makes the start of a new campaign so exhilarating. This unknown quantity that is the new season has had me drooling all week long, and when kick off time comes around on Sunday, I’ll be on the edge of my seat from the get go. Sure, it’s nice to look back on the recent achievements of this fantastic group of players, as you can see above, but there are few things in football that match the anticipation of the fans in the immediate lead up to the kick off another season. Who will be crowned champions? Who will disappoint? Who will fill the void left by Ronaldo? Will the new signings prove their worth? Will United’s crop of youth establish themselves as first teamers? These are just some of the questions I’m sure fans everywhere has considered over the past seven weeks or so. Fortunately, answers are not too far away. This Sunday, when United kick off at Old Trafford against Birmingham, we will all depart on an epic nine month journey, one which will have its highs and lows, and one which will inevitably deliver moments of brilliance. That’s right folks. Its football season again!

Time for the Next Step – United Youth

However it ends, this season is certainly one that will go down in history. Whether or not this will be for good reasons or bad reasons remains to be seen, but one way or the other this season will not be forgotten any time soon. It has thrown up all sorts of surprises, and many twists and turns. We have seen United play poorly, and we have seen them play magnificently. We have seen our veterans play sparkling, champagne football, and we have watched them fail to meet their own high standards. Most importantly however, we have seen the emergence of some incredible talents in the famous red shirt, and when taking into consideration the impressive nature of these performances, coupled with United’s worrying blip in form, the question must be asked, is it time for United to give their young guns a more central role? United Zone Player of the Month – April 09

After a terrible month in March, United are well and truly back on track after an exciting April. April was a month which saw United win every single one of their league games, progress to the semi finals of the Champions League, and put one door in the final. The only real negative was that United’s chance of winning a quintuplet was shattered after some woeful refereeing in the FA Cup semi final in the FA Cup, and some penalty kicks that were even worse. Oh, and United were introduced to a certain promising talent along the way.

But who was the best in an impressive United side over the last month? Well if you were to believe the members of United Zone Football Forums, you would find that there was not one, but two favourites this month. After tallying the votes for the month, left by United Zone members after every game, we have a tie!

Congratulations to Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher, United Zone’s Players of the Month for the month of April. The United Zone electorate was greatly impressed with some battling displays from Fletcher, particularly against Arsenal midweek and Aston Villa, whilst Rooney’s performances against Tottenham and Portsmouth.

Manchester United vs Arsenal: UEFA Champions League Semi Final – Pre Game

Ladies and gentleman fasten your seatbelts and get ready for one of the most anticipated matches in recent history. The most entertaining domestic rivalry in English football is about to go continental. You guessed it; it’s Manchester United vs. Arsenal and its Champions League semi final time! The two English heavyweights will look to reignite their fierce rivalry in a match that has rarely disappointed domestically in what will hopefully be a feast of football.

Very few have ever complained about the quality of football which has been played in matches between United and Arsenal in the last decade or so, and many neutrals watched in awe as the two clubs battled it out in the hope of achieving domestic domination throughout the nineties and early naughties. Whilst it seems United have won that battle, with Arsenal failing to repeat the brilliance of the famous “Invincibles” season with any consistency, while United have since gone on to win two Premier League titles, a Champions League and a World Club Cup to boot. Whilst the rivalry may have faded off in terms of the title picture in recent seasons it has still produced some of United’s most memorable and volatile matches in recent times.
