Wolverhampton Wolves vs. Manchester United | Match Preview

Wolverhampton Wolves vs. Manchester United
English Premier League
Molineux
06. 03. 2010

Match Preview:

After losing at Goodison Park two weeks ago, Manchester United will be thrilled to have won the first major trophy of the season, which they secured at Wembley with a 2-1 win over Aston Villa. Sir Alex Ferguson will hope that such a morale boosting win will be the catalyst which will fire United to a prolonged run of form which is now essential to any ambitions United may harbour to win the title.

Wolves on the other hand have only managed one win in seven. Although that win did come against a strong Tottenham side, losses to the likes of Bolton and Hull has the Wolves hovering ominously over the relegation zone. Having already lost twice to United this season already, in the Carling Cup and earlier league fixture, there is not much cause for optimism at Molineux, even though they did defeat United 1-0 last time Fergie’s men played Wolves at Molineux in the league. The Manchester Derby – No further introduction required.

If you happened to glance at the English Premier League table this morning, you would find that, as it stands, the top four teams are, in order: Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City. Anyone care to pick the odd one out? Of course, Manchester City is the name which jumps out more than most in that list. When you consider that it’s been 33 years since their last success in any competition it does come as a bit of a surprise to see them occupying third place, even this early, in the Premier League. They are the club on everyone’s lips. Having spent over 200 million pounds in the transfer market this season, big things are expected of Manchester’s “other” club, and why not? With a much stronger squad than last season, more money than God himself, and a 100% start to the season, whose going to stop them from finally enjoying a successful season? Well, that’s an easy one: Manchester United.

A New Season Beckons

  • 2007: Champions of England.
2008: Champions of England, Champions of Europe
2009: Champions of England, Champions of the World
    2010: Anything is possible.
  • And that is what makes the start of a new campaign so exhilarating. This unknown quantity that is the new season has had me drooling all week long, and when kick off time comes around on Sunday, I’ll be on the edge of my seat from the get go. Sure, it’s nice to look back on the recent achievements of this fantastic group of players, as you can see above, but there are few things in football that match the anticipation of the fans in the immediate lead up to the kick off another season. Who will be crowned champions? Who will disappoint? Who will fill the void left by Ronaldo? Will the new signings prove their worth? Will United’s crop of youth establish themselves as first teamers? These are just some of the questions I’m sure fans everywhere has considered over the past seven weeks or so. Fortunately, answers are not too far away. This Sunday, when United kick off at Old Trafford against Birmingham, we will all depart on an epic nine month journey, one which will have its highs and lows, and one which will inevitably deliver moments of brilliance. That’s right folks. Its football season again!

Asia Tour 2009 – The Final Word

Without Ronaldo and Tevez at United anymore I was rather interested to see how the team coped with out them especially Ronaldo. My main worry was where are the goals coming from? Sure Rooney and Berbatov bagged a few last season but it was clear to tell our main goal threat was the Portuguese winger.

Manchester United vs Arsenal: UEFA Champions League Semi Final – Pre Game

Ladies and gentleman fasten your seatbelts and get ready for one of the most anticipated matches in recent history. The most entertaining domestic rivalry in English football is about to go continental. You guessed it; it’s Manchester United vs. Arsenal and its Champions League semi final time! The two English heavyweights will look to reignite their fierce rivalry in a match that has rarely disappointed domestically in what will hopefully be a feast of football.

Very few have ever complained about the quality of football which has been played in matches between United and Arsenal in the last decade or so, and many neutrals watched in awe as the two clubs battled it out in the hope of achieving domestic domination throughout the nineties and early naughties. Whilst it seems United have won that battle, with Arsenal failing to repeat the brilliance of the famous “Invincibles” season with any consistency, while United have since gone on to win two Premier League titles, a Champions League and a World Club Cup to boot. Whilst the rivalry may have faded off in terms of the title picture in recent seasons it has still produced some of United’s most memorable and volatile matches in recent times.

UEFA Champions League – Quarter Final Draw Reaction

Well, if it were possible, I don’t think Sir Alex Ferguson could have picked a better draw himself. Whilst perhaps many of us wanted to play Liverpool, mainly for revenge, I think we all would have jumped at the opportunity to play Porto in the quarter finals instead. In a recent press conference, Sir Alex Ferguson played down United’s chances of an unprecedented quintuplet, stating that it is impossible to win all competitions without a little luck, however he will be jumping for joy at the news of United’s Champions League draw. It now looks as though Manchester United have a real chance of retaining their crown as Champions of Europe, potentially the first to do so, since the competition was reformed in 1992.

Inter Milan vs Manchester United: Pre Match

It’s getting closer and closer to a thrilling climax to the season and that can only mean one thing: Champions League knock out stages, starting this week with the round of sixteen. There are some cracking ties on show. Chelsea vs. Juventus, will Ranieri come back to haunt his former club? Arsenal vs. Roma, can Arsenal stop the rot against an improving Roma side? Real Madrid vs. Liverpool, who will win this battle of continental heavyweights, and surely, the two clubs most despised by United fans? All these questions will be answered, but undoubtedly the tie of the round has to be Manchester United vs. Inter Milan.

    Andy Cole Retires

Andrew Alexander Cole, better known as Andy Cole to the Old Trafford faithful who watched him throughout the mid 1990’s through the turn of the millennium. Andy Cole, who this month retired from football as the second highest scorer in the Premier League after a career which lasted 19 years, got me back to thinking about that glorious season of ’99 and the fantastic partnership he cooked up with Dwight Yorke. In his time at United he amassed a goliath total of 93 goals in 195 appearances, almost a ratio of a goal every two games. His contribution to the treble winning side of 1999 was legendary; forming what was, without a shadow of doubt, his most productive partnership, with Yorke. The 53 goals scored by that partnership were pivotal in the success of that amazing season, and since, we have not seen a striking partnership grace Old Trafford which has been as successful.
