Default Capello prepared to axe becks

Anxious wait for former England skipper Beckham as Capello prepares to leave him out

Capello announces his 22-man squad on Saturday for next Wednesday's Wembley friendly - his first match in charge of England - and Spanish newspaper Marca report the Italian has told his inner circle Beckham will not be included.

The former Real Madrid boss, who coached Beckham in the Spanish capital, will attempt to speak to the player this week before making a definitive decision but reckons the 32-year-old cannot be fully match-fit, having not played a competitive game since late November.

It is the close season for Beckham's club side, Los Angeles Galaxy, and Capello has also expressed serious doubts about the standard of Major League Soccer.

However, he insists he is not closing the door on Beckham, who won his 99th cap in the defeat against Croatia in November.

Capello has been impressed with the performances of Tottenham's Aaron Lennon and Blackburn's David Bentley and believes that they have made a more convincing case for inclusion.

He will not be moved by emotional calls to make Beckham captain and allow him to reach his century. Capello insists that if he has been hired to remedy England's ills after the team's failure to qualify for Euro 2008, he needs to take this kind of pragmatic decision.

Beckham is training with Arsenal to stay in shape and Capello has been impressed by his efforts to maintain fitness. But, according to sources close to the new England manager, Capello still does not think that Beckham has been able to demonstrate that he is ready for international football - even if next week's match is only a friendly.

By leaving out Beckham, Capello wants to make it clear that there is a new era at the FA. He has also insisted that neither Sir Trevor Brooking, the director of football development, nor Brian Barwick, the chief executive, will have any say in his squad selection. He intends to lay down a marker for his reign as England coach by choosing a squad based entirely on merit.

Capello said this month that Beckham could still "give a lot" for England.

Despite the midfielder's very public ostracism while the pair were at Madrid last season, Capello has made it clear that the decision to leave the Englishman out of the squad there for a month following his agreement to transfer to LA Galaxy at the end of the campaign was taken by the club president, Ramón Calderón.

Impressed by Beckham's professionalism, it was Capello who insisted on the Englishman's return to the side, for whom he played a major role in winning the league title.

Capello had been expected to include Beckham in this week's squad. Sir Alex Ferguson, who managed Beckham at Manchester United, said he was certain Beckham would play against Switzerland.

"I don't think there is any doubt about that," he said. "To deny him another cap when he is already on 99 would not be right and I think Capello has made up his mind about that."

Beckham was left out of the first England squad named by Capello's predecessor, Steve McClaren, but fought his way back into the team after an 11-month absence to move to within a cap of joining Peter Shilton, Sir Bobby Moore, Sir Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright in the elite band of footballers who have played 100 times for England.

deja vu, huh?

i remember last time he dropped him.

I think its stupid not to play him, he has proven so many people wrong, worked so hard over the years and took all the shit people threw at him. He is percieved by some as arrogant but from what ive seen from him he is actually a nice guy. He is also a great player and you can fault his work ethic.

Fabio is obviously not here to make friends.

I'd agree with that 100%. I, personally, think that Beckham is invaluable to the England squad. I think his skill set means that he's capable of playing long after others' have to retire. However, this is all irrelevant because I think Beckham deserves 100 caps. It costs the England squad, the England fans, the FA, and Capello NOTHING to at least put him on the pitch for 10 minutes in a friendly. The guy deserves at least that, if nothing more. It's pretty sickening, though, how McClaren needed to "make an example" by dropping Beckham only to call him back to try and save his skin (which Beckham almost helped do) and now Capello may be doing the exact same thing.

Would the Croatia result have been different had Beckham started? It didn't take long for a Beckham cross to Crouch to find the back of the net once he was introduced. England win when Beckham plays. Don't be a fool Capello (and at the very least, don't be an ass.)

Fine, Becks might have had a bad season in US with all the injuries and the Hollywood style life, but he DESERVES his 100th cap for all the service has done for his country.

A tru sportsman, never moaning about being left behind, never questioning the gaffer, never once flaunting dirty linnen in the papers - and boy he must've had a lot to say about both Capello and Mclaren.

Plus, is he really worse then the lot of footballers in the England squad?

Default Interesting....

Simple solution...pick him now, then all your headaches go away and you never have to deal with the issue again...since leaving him out, now it is just going to linger....

He is decent, I mean, he is very limited in his options in football of what he can do, although it is very harsh not to give him his 100th cap, do it and get it over with...

From the moment I heard he's going to coach England I knew he would leave David out. I hate that I was right. What's the problem Capello? Okay David might not have played since November [not his fault if his team isn't playing], but he did have training sessions with these and he also did leave Alan Smith out who plays all the time for Newcastle, so it's a weird excuse for David. He could have given him his 100th game for England, it's a friendly, it's not even important if they win or not.

I agree 100% with Capello.Becks doesn't have the match fitness needed. He's an excellent player but he's had his ups and downs lately.Still think that move to LA harmed his England career.

There will be more friendlies, and gimme qualification games. I don't think there's any doubt Becks will play for England again at some point. But Becks is a known quantity, especially to Cappello, whereas he probably doesn't know that much about some other England players. So why not try out some new faces in a mean nothing game and get a feel for them, and then he can always use Becks down the road when he (Capello) has a better idea of what he's working with and what he's trying to build?

I think giving Bentley/Young international experiance is better than playing Beckham for a worthless game just so he gets his 100th cap. i'm sure Beckham will get his chance in the future.
